Modems survive remote Welsh duties

A Jekyll Electronic Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 3, 2006

To help Traffic Wales solve its telemetry problems, Jekyll developed a new IP67 version of its renowned Telemodem2 industrial modem.

Monitoring transport statistics plays an important role in ensuring the people of Wales are kept up to date with the latest information regarding traffic numbers.

The data collected provides various authorities and information groups with detailed information on traffic numbers and in some instances vehicle classification and speeds.

The statistics are collected on an hourly basis, 24/7 from a network of 320 traffic monitoring stations situated along the trunk roads.

The Transport Department in the National Assembly of Wales is responsible for collecting and analysing the data.

Traffic Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government's traffic information service is responsible for the maintenance of the traffic outstations, including the integral modems that relay the data back to the instation.

"As these outstations are situated throughout the country, we need to ensure that they are reliable and are capable of working 24/7", explains Duncan Howells from Traffic Wales.

"We started getting problems with water ingress, particularly in the outstations that were in some of the more remote and rugged areas in Wales".

"We realised we needed modems certified to IP67 to make sure that these problems were eliminated".

Already working with other companies and providing them with remote data collection solutions, Jekyll Electronic Technology was called in to help Traffic Wales solve the problem.

Jekyll used its considerable engineering expertise to develop a new IP67 version of its renowned Telemodem2 industrial modem.

The product is ideal for data acquisition applications where the communications device needs to be situated in remote, rural and exposed locations.

Just what Traffic Wales wanted.

The devices are robust and battery free, overcoming the high maintenance and costly downtimes of traditional battery powered modems.

"We have been delighted with the final product", continues Howells.

"The new modems have proved to be very reliable".

"There is now less maintenance required on the outstations".
