A Scot who has taken up a top post with a leading professional organisation has been setting out his plans which include an emphasis on education and training.

Hamilton-born Tom Lynch, whose career in engineering spans 36 years, has been appointed Chief Executive of the British Gear Association.

Mr Lynch, 52, started his career as a 16 year old apprentice with Caterpillar Tractor Company in Glasgow and subsequently held numerous positions before moving to the North East to become production manager of Clarke Chapman, an NEI company which was part of Rolls-Royce PLC.

In that capacity he was involved in the production of all types of cranes - marine, rail, offshore, dockside and associated equipment before moving into sales and marketing and eventually assistant to the general manager.

He moved on to set up a general engineering function to support the core business of APV Baker, Peterborough, and was responsible for generating considerable new business over a two year period.

He moved back to the North East to run an aluminium die casting foundry for the GT Group and during his seven years ran the foundry as general manager and latterly commercial and technical director.

Of his new appointment with the British Gear Association, Mr.Lynch said it was an opportunity for him to put something back into engineering, particularly into education and training.

"It will certainly be a challenge but also an opportunity to use the skills I have developed in industry to help other companies gain experience in the various aspects of manufacturing.

"Although this is an industry which is not as buoyant as it has been in the past, there are nonetheless opportunities and the BGA has a team which intends to continue its support of current members and increase membership on an on-going basis".

Mr.Lynch, a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, plans to move near to the BGA's headquarters at Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, in the near future.
