A four-day introduction to gear cutting and measurement course is to be supported by the British Gear Association in May and repeated in November.

Venue for the first course, which is designed for engineers, technicians, supervisors, inspectors and setters, is Coventry Technical College.

The course, to be run from 13th to 16th May inclusive, is for delegates who may have little or no prior knowledge of gear cutting and measurement and the content includes basic involute gear theory, terms and definitions for spur and helical gears.

Practical work will be carried out on the measurement of gears as well as setting up and producing spur and helical gears by hobbing and shaping.

On completion of the course delegates should have an understanding of basic spur and helical gear theory and terminology; how spur and helical gears are cut by hobbing and shaping; some practical experience in setting up and measuring gears; and be able to carry out calculations for their manufacture and measurement.

A tool which each delegate will need to take along to the course is a calculator.

Dates for the November course have still to be confirmed.
