The British Mechanical Power Transmission Association (BMPTA), formerly the British Gear Association, is holding its first two seminars since recently changing its name.

The British Mechanical Power Transmission Association (BMPTA), formerly the British Gear Association, is holding its first two seminars since recently changing its name.

A seminar programme has been arranged on shot peening which will take place at the Catalis Conference Centre, London Road, Derby, on 10th June 2003 between 0930 and 1600.

A site visit to Metal Improvement Company, Derby, has also been arranged during the afternoon.

The seminar will outline the theory and practice of shot peening, a recognised method of improving the fatigue of components, which will allow engineers to be more aware of the advantages that this process can provide.

The programme will cover method and control, media, intensity, coverage, test method, equipment, applications and future developments.

The tutors will be Graham Hammersley and Jeremy Allen of the Metal Improvement Company.

This and a seminar on mechanical drive systems, on 13th May 2003 at the Riverside Hotel, Branston, Burton upon Trent, are two of the topics under the BMPTA's 2003 technology transfer programme.

The seminar, between 1030 and 1630, will discuss typical problems and solutions and instrumentation for troubleshooting and in-service load measurement.

The programme will cover the dynamics of shaft-mounted gearboxes, the effect of coupling characteristics on dynamic gearbox torques and transient torques in direct online start drives.

In addition, self-excited vibration in railway traction systems, torsional resonances in geared drives and an instrumentation system for rotating machinery.

The tutors will be Dr J Rosinkski and DA Hofmann, both of the Design Unit, University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
