Report on EU power transmission production

A BMPTA British Mechanical Power Transmission Association product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 13, 2003

A new pan-European report is the first to provide certainty that each country's mechanical power transmission production and trade data are presented on a comparable basis, intercountry and over time.

A report that provides certainty that each European country's mechanical power transmission production and trade data are presented on a comparable basis, intercountry and over time, is the first of its kind to be produced by the British Mechanical Power Transmission Association.

Members of the newly named British Mechanical Power Transmission Association (BMPTA) can have a free of charge CD providing the statistical profile of the European mechanical power transmission industry.

For a number of years the BMPTA, formerly the British Gear Association, published statistics on the European mechanical power transmission industry based on UK data and reports from members of Eurotrans - the European Committee of Associations of Manufacturers of Gears and Transmission Parts.

In the past the data have been published as a report entitled "Current market outlook", and although it provided a useful insight into the European industry, compilation of the data revealed uncertainties as to consistency.

In particular, which products different countries included - or excluded - under the four main headings of chain, gears, gearboxes and transmissions.

BMPTA members have also asked for more detail than could be provided in the "Current market outlook" reports.

The association saw that the development of the European Union - and in particular the advent of the Euro - provided an opportunity to generate data on the European market based on official EU sources such as Eurostat.

This alternative approach was seen as likely to provide greater detail, improved consistency as to product classification and in effect more complete data.

In the first of its reports based entirely on data from official EU sources, the BMPTA provides: data for 39 product classifications summarised under 10 product group headings, compared with just four in the previous report; certainty that each European country's production and trade data are presented on a comparable basis, inter-country and over time; sufficient detail as to European trade to highlight production, balance of trade and consumption; and the potential for far more detailed analysis to show every EU country's trade in terms of both value and volume for each of the 39 product classifications.

The first report provides European trade data for the years 1999-2001 together with production data for 1999.

The first copy of the report on CD is free of charge to BMPTA members.

Additional CDs will cost GBP 50.

A CD for nonmembers is GBP 150.
