Gears engineer innovative hoist solution

A Brevini product story

An innovative hoist solution using both a Brevini planetary gear driven winch and a two-speed Posired 2 helical gearbox from PIV has been developed for UK crane builder MOS Materials Handling.

An innovative hoist solution using both a Brevini planetary gear driven winch and a two-speed Posired 2 helical gearbox from Brevini UK Group Company PIV has been developed for UK crane builder MOS Materials Handling.

MOS designed a dockside crane for the Port of Boston in Lincolnshire to provide high speed handling of large paper rolls being shipped in from Germany and heavier duty low speed general handling duties.

MOS's crane design incorporates a rigid roof over the main girder and several side curtains to protect paper rolls from the weather as they are unloaded, a high cycle time for moving the rolls, that can weigh up to 2t, is achieved using a PLC controlled semi-automated system.

Once the paper roll is secure in the grab it is hoisted at 60m/min and travels 26m along the main girder at 100m/min.

It is then lowered to a predetermined position and set down.

Once released, the paper grab automatically returns to a predetermined position above the ship's hold.

The crane is operated using a radio control system.

The apron hoist winch employs a split drum, ie a right hand scroll and left hand scroll on the same drum, each half lifting up to 1.75t to provide the high-speed paper handling capacity of 3.5t.

The twin drum design allows a safety factor of 2.5t on each drum using two independent electrically operated brakes (in case of one failing).

For general handling duties, the PIV gearbox changes from a 1:1 to 3:1 speed ratio via radio controlled mechanical actuator, as the slower gear is selected the lifting capacity increases to 10t and hoisting speed is reduced to 8m/min.

The winch drum, gearbox and support assembly was supplied via local winch specialists NIM Engineering to the customer's requirements, and had to fit within the envelope available as the legs and long travel carriages were refurbished items from an older dockside crane.

Jon Snaith, Engineering Manager at Brevini UK comments: "The important thing for the customer in this case was that Brevini UK was able to provide a complete engineered solution thanks to our ability to draw on both the products and engineering experience of our group companies".
