BSL is helping machine tool users to achieve performance improvements at low cost with the introduction of the new Ultra series super precision spindle bearings from NSK-RHP The Ultra series combines high speed capabilities (up to 2.5 x 106 DmN for the steel ball version) with low internal heat generation, whilst maintaining the precision, accuracy and high surface finish of precision machined parts

The Ultra series achieves speeds in its steel ball versions previously attainable only with ceramic balls.

Importantly, this improved performance is achieved within the standard ISO series 10 size envelope.

This means that the bearings are dimensionally interchangeable with standard super precision bearings and can readily replace the latter units in machine tool spindles for higher speed capability.

The Ultra has an optimised internal design which ensures low heat generation.

The bearings have a 15deg contact angle for high speed operation, and are equipped with a very light weight one piece Phenolic cage.

An advantage of the Phenolic cage is that it retains small quantities of oil, and therefore functions well under marginal lubrication conditions at high speeds.

Finally, the internal geometry of the Ultra is such that dynamic stability is very high, resulting in lower wear and less fall-off of stiffness at high speed.

For applications where even higher spindle speeds are required, BSL is offering a HY version of Ultra with ceramic balls.

The use of silicon nitride ceramic balls significantly reduces centrifugal forces since its density is only 40% of that of carbon/chrome steel.

What this means in practice is that under high speed running, stresses at the outer ring of the hybrid bearing are reduced, with the result that reliable operation at speeds up to 2.8 x 10-6Dm.N (a 12% increase over steel rolling elements) is easily achievable using oil/air lubrication.

Even higher speeds than this can be obtained under certain conditions.

Ceramic balls offer another advantage in that their modulus of elasticity is 50% higher than that of steel and have a much longer fatigue life.

This higher modulus raises the stiffness of the bearing by about 12% when stationary, and at speed there is less fall-off of stiffness, the latter being a condition which results from changes in ball/raceway contact conditions.

In fact, depending upon speed, the bearing stiffness using ceramic balls may be raised by anything between 12 - 100%.
