Legal issues boost spill prevention sales

A Brammer UK product story

Brammer has seen sales of spill prevention and containment products soar on the back of fears of heavy fines and convictions.

Fear of heavy fines and convictions is driving demand for oil control products, according to Brammer.

The company has seen sales of spill prevention and containment products soar in the past 12 months.

Tools and Maintenance Division Manager Ian Lofthouse said: "Companies handling oil on a regular basis are becoming increasingly aware of their obligations under government oil storage regulations".

"There's a fear factor among many of them, and it's behind growing demand for products such as self-bunded storage tanks, spill kits and absorbent barriers".

"Companies face heavy fines if they let oil leak into watercourses, so bunds are popular for preventing leaks in the first place".

"If a leak does occur, there are spill response pads, cushions, booms and absorbent granules to contain and clean up".

Brammer has seen sales of all these sorts of products increase markedly in the past 12 months.

Bunds are containers surrounding oil storage tanks, and must be able to hold 110% of the tank's volume to prevent overflow.

The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations were introduced in 2002, and anyone storing more than 200 litres of oil at an industrial site must comply with them.
