The Bosch Group has opened a new development and technology centre in China at Suzhou approximately 80km west of Shanghai at a cost of Eur 50 million.

It is part of a commitment by the company to invest Eur 500 million in the Chinese market over the next three years.

This commitment will bring the total amount invested in China by Bosch to over Eur 1 billion.

The new technology centre will employ around 220 employees and occupy an area of some 200,000m2 of space concentrating in the field of automotive electronics and brake systems.

In the longer term the new Bosch facility will employ in excess of 300 people.

"In addition to the demand for cleaner and more economical cars, China will in future feel the need for more safety", said Dr Rudolf Colm, Member of the Board of Management of the Bosch Group.

"This is why we are convinced of the potential for electronic stability program (ESP) systems".

Currently the installation rate for ESP in China amounts to some 3%, the company expects that this will triple by 2008.

Bosch has been offering ESP systems in the Chinese market for the last three years and producing antilock braking systems (ABS) from its plant in Suzhou since the end of 2003.

Production of ESP systems is expected to commence at the same plant this year.

Bosch has a major presence in China and plans to invest more than Eur 500 million in fixed assets over the next two years.

The company has already invested Eur 550 million in China and employs some 10,700 people.

Bosch is represented with holdings in Shanghai and Beijing in addition to 11 wholly owned subsidiaries and nine joint ventures.

The lion's share of this investment is intended to establish or extend production capacity for automotive original equipment.

The company has 20 manufacturing sites in China and sells its products through six after-market companies and manages more than 400 Bosch service workshops.

In 2004 Bosch generated sales in China worth Eur 1.2 billion.
