A unique training programme is being implemented in the UK to underline the importance of active safety systems and the impact these technologies can have in preventing accidents and saving lives.

A unique training programme developed and operated by Bosch, the world's largest automotive Tier 1 supplier, is being implemented in the UK to underline the importance of active safety systems and the impact that these technologies can have in preventing accidents and saving lives.

The success of this programme can be judged by the fact that last year some 2200 OEM management and dealer sales staff from Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Renault were trained.

This included driving vehicles with and without ESP (electronic stability program).

Independent studies have reported that the fitment of active safety technology to cars and in particular ESP can and will reduce the number of accidents on European roads.

A key requirement to gaining higher ESP installation rate on new cars is overcoming ignorance of what the system is and what it does - a Bosch survey in the UK last year showed that only 1% of motorists knew about ESP.

This was supported by an SMMT survey in October last year which highlighted that only 5% of motorists knew about the technology.

Bosch will expand its ESPerience training programme in the coming 12 months to include other car manufacturers, major dealer groups and key fleet companies.

The company aims to highlight the importance of active safety systems and the necessity of specifying ESP on all new vehicles including vans.
