The British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA) has received a contract worth GBP 262,000 from the DTI under the ICT Carrier scheme.
The British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA) has received a contract worth GBP 262,000 from the DTI under the ICT Carrier scheme.
The objective of this project is to transfer and exploit radio frequency identification device (RFID) technology, applied to pump manufacturers and end users in over 80% of the industry.
The project will be over a 3-year period and the role of the BPMA will be project management, It is expected that 'intelligent' passive and active 'sensory' tags linked to high-speed wireless technology can increase profitability, productivity and overall industry competitiveness, in areas such as: enhanced manufacturing processes; improved productivity; faster order response and better customer service; increased field service and distribution; and the development of new products with added-value to end-user functions, eg condition monitoring, predictive breakdown.
As well as the BPMA, other members of the project team are: the University of Central England, Blisland consultants, six leading international specialists in applications and different aspects of RF technology, and six BPMA member companies to act as demonstrators.
The project will pay for six trials, which will be carried out in conjunction with the demonstrators.
It is envisaged that the trials will be in business areas such as: manufacturing, predictive breakdown, field service, energy management, condition monitoring and life cycle costs.
This is one of the largest projects ever received by the BPMA from the DTI and it is expected that the results will enhance the pump industry.
Over the coming months there will be ongoing activities, which will offer, more information that will also prove to be of interest.
In particular free technical seminars, will be held to review this technology in more detail on Wednesday 10th April and Wednesday 30th April 2002.
