Just six months following its launch, the BSSA's web-based technical advisory service is receiving over 100 'hits' per day for on-line advice on stainless steel.

The success of this e-advisory site has enabled a wide range of user interests and problems to be addressed.

Enquirers can search the list of technical areas or ask 'free format' questions of their own.

Technical areas which have proved particularly popular include those relating to material selection, technical standards, specifications and grades.

Other topics such as surface finishes, treatments and cleaning of stainless steel, design and properties have also received notable interest from site users.

Existing articles on standards and specifications are periodically reviewed, to keep the information up to date and new articles have been added to the 100 made available on the site at its launch.

In addition to technical information, the new site also incorporates a comprehensive listing of BSSA members' products and services to facilitate searches.

This new e-advisory venture, like the BSSA's complementary Stainless Steel Advisory Service [SSAS] launched in January 2000, has benefited from DTI funding support.

The BSSA has also established partnerships with the Institute of Materials, to provide the resources for the telephone advisory services and the Steel Construction Institute, to develop the new web site and host the service.

Roger Crookes, the principal technical advisor at the SSAS, believes that stainless steel remains one of the few 'metals' to offer such a dedicated full-time advisory service free to all users.

He commentated "Currently, the SSAS is handling around 100 enquiries, by telephone/fax or e-mail per week, on a wide range of technical and source of supply issues.

Nearly 20% of these represent a sales opportunity for BSSA members." These initiatives from the BSSA represent a key element of its marketing strategy, to increase the per-capita usage of stainless steel in the UK to the level of other European countries, notably Italy and Germany.
