Guidelines on stainless-steel products

A British Stainless Steel Association product story

The UK Drinking Water Inspectorate has agreed a new set of operational guidelines and code of practice regarding the use of stainless-steel products in contact with drinking water for public supply.

Following application from a working group spearheaded by the British Stainless Steel Association (BSSA), the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) has formally agreed a new set of operational guidelines and code of practice (OGCP) regarding the use of stainless-steel products in contact with drinking water for public supply.

By recommending approval for stainless-steel products, conforming to tested grades and used in accordance with the OGCP, the DWI has provided opportunities for companies to obtain approvals for their own specific products.

However as a consequence of this new legislation, water companies and contractors will only be able to use stainless-steel products from specific firms approved by the DWI.

Application forms seeking approval from the DWI which relate to this new Regulation 25 Letter 7/2001 can be obtained by accessing the DWI website at www.dwi.gov.uk/cpp/index.htm.

Duncan Munro, Director of the BSSA commented: "Durability, lack of contamination of the water, low maintenance and low life cycle costs all make stainless steel a highly attractive material for use in water treatment, storage and supply lines.

We believe that DWI approval and the accompanying OGCP will encourage plant designers and specifiers to make increasing use of these benefits".

Copies of the OGCP can be found on the BSSA website.
