The Stainless Steel Advisory Service [SSAS] has now handled over 20,000 enquiries.

Launched in 2000 by the British Stainless Steel Association [BSSA] as a major initiative to raise the profile of stainless steel in the UK and increase the per capita usage, the SSAS has provided free technical assistance on numerous stainless related topics raised by telephone, fax and e-mail queries.

During this period, the principal technical adviser at the SSAS has been Roger Crookes.

With over 40 years experience of the steel industry, he has built up an extensive knowledge within the stainless steel industry.

Crookes commented: "Providing advice on behalf of the BSSA has often been challenging, but always rewarding".

"Of course, some of the enquiries can be 'routine' but there is always something new to look at in this very diverse field".

"Although we don't claim to know all the answers (and never will), the network of BSSA contacts is always willing to help".

The success of the SSAS prompted the launch in 2000 coincided with the redevelopment of the BSSA website, which was re-launched later that year, providing a complementary advisory service offering a wide range of technical articles about stainless steel.

Over the years this website has been continually developed and updated to include nearly 200 technical articles and 90 publications, together with a comprehensive BSSA member's, products and service locator.

The SSAS is open four days a week Monday through to Thursday from 0900GMT to 1600GMT.
