An automatic, rotary-arm, scoop-type sampling system from Bristol Equipment Company draws samples of bulk material from belt conveyors moving at speeds of up to 615ft/min.

An automatic, rotary-arm, scoop-type sampling system from Bristol Equipment Company draws samples of bulk material from belt conveyors moving at speeds of up to 615ft/min, and deposits the samples into an open or closed receptacle standing alongside the belt Bristol's third-generation DS-3B sampler, with standard 3in-wide scoop, reaches into material on the conveyor and captures up to 16in3 of sample per cycle in particulate sizes up to 1.5in in diameter

Other scoop sizes are optionally available.

Automatic sampling cycles are user-adjustable from every 10s to every 1700h.

The Bristol belt sampler has proven to be both cost efficient and effective with such diverse materials as crushed rock and coal, wet phosphate pebble, various metal ores, Portland and clinker cement, agricultural fertilizer and others.

The unit can be positioned almost anywhere along the conveyor line where space permits, on horizontal or inclined conveyors with up to an 18-degree slope.

On command from a signal initiated either from the sampler control or by remote automation, the scoop arm makes a single revolution in the direction of belt travel, at a speed adjusted to slightly exceed belt speed.

The arm rotates around an axis that is perpendicular to the belt, but angled 45 degrees to horizontal.

Sample material is held in the scoop by centrifugal force until released near the top of the scoop-arm's rotational arc, where the scoop stops abruptly, flinging the sample into a stainless steel hopper.

Quick arm rotation and abrupt stop result from a worm-gear reduction drive powered by a 0.75HP brake-motor.

The point at which the arm stops to discharge the sample is user-adjustable for optimal release of different materials.

Scoop and hopper are made of 12-gauge, type 18-8 stainless steel to resist wear and rust contamination of the sample.

The leading edge of the scoop is weld-hardfaced for long life.

The entire sampling system is contained within a rugged, 10-gauge, welded-steel cabinet with all surfaces protected by a polyurethane enamel coating.

It mounts on its own steel support bridge, spanning over the conveyor support frame.

To guard against accidents, the above-belt area swept by scoop-arm movement stays within the cabinet.

Drive components are housed in a sealed compartment that excludes abrasive dust and water.

The cabinet measures 50in long, 48in wide and less than 24in high, including dual top-mounted hinged covers over maintenance hatches.

The unit requires 230 or 460V three-phase 60Hz service for the motor.

Controls, powered from the same source through an onboard 115V step-down transformer for safety and minimum maintenance, are mounted externally in a NEMA IV enclosure for protection from dust and weather.
