BAE Systems has welcomed the publication of the Defence Technology Strategy (DTS) for the United Kingdom.

BAE Systems has welcomed the publication of the Defence Technology Strategy (DTS) for the United Kingdom.

The DTS sets out the areas of research and development the MoD views as the most important to the future provision of military capability to the UK's Armed Forces.

The Minister for Defence Procurement Lord Drayson said that the strategy would help MoD and industry plan future investment in research and development (R and D) and provide long-term support to the UK's science and technology skill base.

He also recognised the need for investment in military technology research and unveiled measures to encourage innovation in key areas by a wide range of organisations.

He added: "It is now vital that we work together to deliver this strategy to ensure the UK maintains a strong research base in the areas identified as critical to our security and sovereignty".

Simon Jewell, who sponsors BAE Systems' central research and technology programme, said that the company would need to time digest the full implications of the paper but welcomed its publication.

He continued: "We are delighted that the MoD has engaged with industry on developing the DTS and look forward to a phase of consultation and joint development of detailed plans".

"We note Lord Drayson's comments about the need for government investment in R and T and we also recognise that we too have a role to play".

"The Defence Industrial Strategy and now the linked DTS will help provide the clarity industry needs to plan investment in developing key technologies.

"We also note the document's focus on emerging technologies in information and decision support, sensor networks and autonomous operations".

"We are already investing heavily and working with a range of organisations in these areas, including academe and SMEs".

"We welcome all moves to make the sector more vibrant and inclusive".
