Ninety four per cent of CAD/CAM using sites use PCs, but half of these sites use clones, (i.e unbadged, unbranded or little-used brands of PC) rather than well- known brands, says a new report

Ninety four per cent of CAD/CAM using sites use PCs, but half of these sites use clones, (i.e unbadged, unbranded or little-used brands of PC) rather than well- known brands of PC, according to recent research conducted by The Business Advantage Group Plc.

CAD/CAM users were interviewed about their use of hardware devices during the update of Business Advantage's database of 20,000 UK CAD/CAM user sites over the last 6 months.

The research also found that: The top 3 most popular brands of PC among CAD/CAM using sites are: Gateway (24%), Dell (19%) and Compaq (14%).

Workstations are used by 13% of CAD/CAM using sites, and Applemacs by just 3%.

The top 3 most popular workstation brands among CAD/CAM using sites are Sun (48%), HP (28%) and SGI (17%).

Sue Hannay, Research Services Director of The Business Advantage Group Plc, observes: "The IT industry may be surprised that clones should dominate the market of CAD/CAM sites that use PCs, or indeed, that Gateway should have such a lead as the most popular brand of PC." The findings came from telephone interviews conducted between August and January 2001 with 2,635 UK CAD/CAM user sites (selected to provide a representative sample of the total UK CAD/CAM market).
