New ceramic coating technology promises to extend sensor life in welding applications.

Balluff reckons it can extend sensor life in welding applications with its new ceramic coating technology.

The conditions present in resistance welding applications are extremely harsh.

In particular, weld slag and weld flash lead to high rates of sensor failure.

Weld slag melts the surface of sensor caps coated with thermoplastic materials.

Eventually, enough slag embeds itself in the cap, causing the sensor to lock-on.

The WO1 ceramic coating developed by Balluff contains special additives to ensure that the sensor: outperforms thermoset and thermoplastic materials; resists weld slag buildup, high heat and mechanical damage; maintains sensing range and sensor performance; and increases sensor life and productivity.

The high velocity of weld flash can cause thermoset materials to chip, causing surface pitting and eventual slag build-up that results in sensor failure.

Balluff's new W01 coating technology dramatically increases sensor life in resistance welding applications.

This new proprietary coating, developed by Balluff, can be applied to inductive proximity sensors with virtually no sensor performance degradation, allowing the sensor to resist weld slag build-up, high heat, and mechanical damage.

Balluff's new W01 coating will initially be available on selected Balluff Weld Field Immune and Factor 1 sensors in both flush and nonflush mount versions.
