IO-Link simplifies Profibus-network modification

A Balluff product story

Balluff's new IO-Link system enables quick and easy expansion or simplification of Profibus and Profinet networks.

It allows users and OEM-equipment builders to achieve better flexibility and simplifies the modification of networks at lower costs.

The IO-Link Master, a Balluff IO-Link expansion module, attaches directly to the Profibus or Profinet network, either as a new node or by being substituted for an existing node.

Using standard three-conductor M12 cordsets, four intelligent IO-Link sensors can be attached up to 20 metres away from the IO-Link Master.

Hardware includes network-expansion modules, sensor hubs, standard M12 non-shielded three-conductor cordsets, standard sensors and intelligent IO-Link sensors.

The sensors are available in a range of different sensing technologies, including distance feedback, RFID and pressure monitors.

This provides cheaper Profibus/Profinet solutions for automation customers.

For example, one Balluff Profibus IO-Link expander and four discrete sensor hubs can replace five discrete Profibus modules, providing 78 inputs while offering 30 - 40 per cent savings, including: network components, network cabling and integration time.

The Balluff IO-Link saves money in planned and unplanned downtime with centralised parameter storage, which can be used for automatic re-parameterisation of replacement IO-Link sensors.

An intelligent sensor can be swapped as easily as a discrete sensor.
