Connector system waterproofs industrial Ethernet

A Bulgin Components product story

Bulgin's new industrial Ethernet connector system is based on the tried and tested standard Buccaneer waterproof power connector, combined with industry standard RJ45 connectors.

With Ethernet networks now extending from the office onto the factory floor and beyond into external environments, there is a need for a more robust and reliable connection for data applications.

The industry standard connector for Ethernet networks, the RJ45, is delicate when faced with the more physical demands of industrial or external environments.

Water, dust, oil and chemicals are all hazards, as are the potential for connector and cable abuse in a rough working environment.

To meet these demands Bulgin's new Ethernet connector system is based on the tried and tested standard Buccaneer waterproof power connector, combined with industry standard RJ45 connectors, to provide a secure and robust connection for Ethernet based networks running up to 100MHz.

Dust and waterproof to IP68, the new Ethernet Buccaneer has a shroud to protect the RJ45 plug from accidental abuse during handling.

This also provides a positive guide for alignment of connectors during mating, which can be a major benefit in awkward or blind areas, or where gloved hands may have to be used.

The screw coupling connection provides a secure and proven locking system, together with protection for the RJ45 interface against contact damage/wear due to mechanical vibration.

Shielded connectors and couplers combine with S-FTP stranded cable to provide a high level of noise immunity and ensure that the EMI protection is maintained throughout, critical in electrically noisy industrial environments.

The system is Cat 5e compliant with data rates up to 100Mbit/s.

Considerable design effort has been employed to ensure the cable and connector will maintain Cat 5e specifications.

The sealing gland and cage have been optimised to maintain an IP68 seal and provide secure cable restraint without disrupting the signal.

The complete Ethernet Buccaneer patch-cords have been independently tested to TIA/EIA Cat 5e levels to ensure compliance.

A high spec cable has been chosen with a PE jacket for maximum chemical and water resistance; UV protection and cracking of the outer cable sheath during prolonged exposure to water are also minimised.

The Ethernet Buccaneer is supplied in three formats to provide a complete system.

The rewirable flex connector, PX0834, is supplied with a shielded RJ45 jack and glands to suit 3-9mm diameter cables.

Patch-cords, PX0830-2, are available in 2, 3 and 5m lengths with either Ethernet Buccaneer to shielded RJ45, Buccaneer to Buccaneer or Buccaneer to bare ends.

A panel mounting coupler, PX0833, completes the range.

This is available with or without an earth lead and continues system integrity, providing a sealed connection to the front of panel and a standard RJ45 connection to the rear.

Sealing caps maintain the IP rating of unmated connectors.

The Ethernet Buccaneer will find many applications within industrial control and monitoring systems where a robust, water and dust proof connector is needed for data transmission.
