Brunel University has appointed Professor Tassos Karayiannis as Professor of Thermal Engineering and Deputy Head of the School of Engineering and Design.

Brunel University has appointed Professor Tassos Karayiannis as Professor of Thermal Engineering and Deputy Head of the School of Engineering and Design.

Professor Karayiannis joins from South Bank University, where he headed up the Department of Engineering Systems.

Professor Karayiannis joins with a project worth over GBP 1 million to study boiling and condensation in microchannels, awarded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Brunel University will be the lead institution in the research consortium, which also includes Queen Mary, Edinburgh, Heriot Watt and Nottingham universities, working alongside nine international industrial partners.

According to Professor Karayiannis: "This work will place the United Kingdom at the forefront of research and development of micro thermal systems for a variety of applications, including the process and refrigeration industries, computers and electronic devices".

"This is a great opportunity for Brunel University, which already has a reputation for excellence in engineering and design".

At Brunel University, Professor Karayiannis will also work on two other EPSRC funded projects in boiling heat transfer in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and colleagues in Ljubljana University, the Los Alamos National Laboratory and University of Genova.

A third project, funded by EPSRC and the UK Atomic Energy Authority on the thermal environment in pressurised protective clothing has also been commissioned.

As Deputy Head, Professor Karayiannis will be responsible for the postgraduate taught provision of the School.

He also teaches thermodynamics, heat transfer and thermal systems.

Professor Karayiannis has spoken about thermal engineering at over 80 conferences and has published work in 39 journals.

He is married with two children and lives in North London.
