Fieldbus system takes on milk processing

Burkert Fluid Control Systems has supplied components for an automation system that is claimed to be the largest milk processing fieldbus in the UK.

Burkert Fluid Control Systems has supplied state-of-the-art components supporting AS-interface control technology for an automation system that is claimed to be the largest milk processing fieldbus installation in the UK The turnkey project, to provide shopfloor-to-boardroom automation for a world class production facility for United Milk at Westbury in Wiltshire UK, was won by GEA Tuchenhagen against strong international competition from a number of major process equipment suppliers

GEA Automation brings together four companies: GEA Ahlborn, a pioneer in the dairy industry; GEA Finnah a leader in tubular heat exchange, UHT plants and filling machines; Tuchenhagen, a pioneer of the mix-proof valve and leading dairy supplier since 1931; and Damrow, a supplier of technologically advanced cheese equipment.

GEA Tuchenhagen, which project managed the installation, specialises in the hygienic, aseptic and sterile production of liquid products for the dairy, food, and juice industries.

A spokesman for GEA says Burkert was chosen because it is a world class company with the components, technology and experience to support the AS-i and Profibus PA and DP fieldbus systems that are a major part of the automation system design for the United Milk project.

"Burkert's support on this project was second to none", he says, adding that the equipment supplied, which included AS-i cable plugs, mini top and diaphragm, general purpose and solenoid valves, was competitively priced and has proved very reliable.
