Burkert Fluid Control Systems has supplied high purity control valves for the latest Purelab Ultra water purification system manufactured by Elga LabWater.

Elga LabWater, a division of Veolia Water Systems specialises in the manufacture of water purification systems for laboratory applications requiring a regular supply of high quality water.

The Purelab Ultra uses a very energy efficient process to remove impurities from tap water and deliver the ultra-pure (18.2Mohm-cm/99.999% purity) water required for bioscience and analytical requirements.

Burkert sensors and solenoid valves are used to control all the automated sequences in the water purification system, including water flow and recirculation, auto rinsing procedures, sanitisation operations and isolation from the feedwater.

They also control the dispensing of purified water into a wide range of containers.

Commenting on the use of Burkert equipment, Alan Mortimer, Elga's R and D Director says that because ultra-pure water is a very aggressive solvent the selection of materials was very important.

"Our specification included valve bodies made from inert materials and dry armatures designed with minimum hide-out areas where bacteria can grow.

As our water purification systems are required to be safe and operate at 24V, we also specified solenoid valves from Burkert's low-voltage range".

He goes on to explain that Burkert also proved to be very responsive and flexible when a nonstandard component was needed.

"To ensure the precision control of the flow rate and re-circulation, we needed a multi-valve manifolding system, which Burkert manufactured specifically for the Purelab Ultra", he says.

Other important considerations were Burkert's global approvals and support network.

Says Alan Mortimer: "Like Burkert, Elga is a global supplier.

All our equipment has to conform to local standards, which includes UL and CSA for North America and CE for the UK and Europe.

Burkert valves already comply with these standards so we don't need to seek further approval".

He concludes by saying that, whilst Burkert products are not the cheapest their combination of quality and reliability, proven in many other Elga water purification systems, made them the obvious choice for the Purelab Ultra's process control system.
