Burkert releases Microfluidics catalogue

A Burkert Fluid Control Systems product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Dec 24, 2008

Burkert has published a Microfluidics catalogue that shows how automation and miniaturisation are creating improved fluidic systems in medical, biomedical and analytical fluid control applications.

These systems are improving established processes substantially, not only by means of higher speed and throughput, but also through reduced costs, as smaller sample and solvent volumes are required.

Microfluidics is a customer-orientated product that provides standard and bespoke fluid control systems in a wide range of application environments, from clinical diagnostic technology, DNA synthesis and medical instruments, to high-throughput laboratory automation, dentistry, analytical processes and industrial ink jet production.

The technology is concerned with the real physics of precision dosing, batching, mixing, distributing, sampling and reagent preparation, where dead legs, internal volume, chemical resistance and precision are paramount.

The fluids handled can be ultra-pure water, aggressive solvents, biochemical substrates, highly concentrated acids or dyes, fast-drying industrial inks and crystallising fluids.

These present a wide range of flow challenges that are handled by Burkert using a mixture of specialised valve systems, combined with technologies such as rapid prototyping, 3D CAD design and simulations, to provide customised control products.

The catalogue has sections dealing with Clinical Diagnostics, Life Sciences, Laboratory Research, Automated Analytics, Intensive Care Technology, Medical Instruments and Industrial applications.

Each section is complemented by examples of microfluidic systems that Burkert has designed and manufactured to meet specific sector requirements.
