Conductivity sensor has hygienic design

A Burkert Fluid Control Systems product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Apr 15, 2009

The Type 8221 conductivity sensor from Burkert Fluid Control Systems is designed for CIP, even during steam sterilisation.

The company said this feature allows the sensor to provide the time- and cost-saving benefits of phase detection across transmitted media, including aggressive cleaning agents.

Burkert’s new 8221 conductivity sensor is designed for CIP, even during steam sterilisation.

It also guarantees transparency of the process at all times, and automatic protection for the user against expensive errors in fluid handling.

The hygienic design and the robust construction of the Type 8221 conductivity sensors mean that they are suitable for use under demanding conditions in food and beverage, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and the general chemical industries.

The sensors offer four-electrode technology for extended measuring range (0.1uS-500mS/cm); this eliminates the polarisation phenomena normally observed with two-electrode sensors.

The engineered design provides good linearity over a wide conductivity range of more than 6- decades, and an integrated temperature sensor (Pt1000) is a standard feature of all versions.

The high surface finish of the 8221 sensors enables the units to remain in situ, during cleaning cycles, even during steam sterilisation, saving time and cost for the process user.

In addition, all the unit's wetted parts are FDA-approved, plus the range of process connection interfaces, provide flexibility across a range of hygienic applications.

Providing analysis of the measured values from the 8221 sensor is Burkert's 8285 modular process analysis system.

Designed to measure and process liquid analysis parameters, the 8285 is housed in a polished stainless-steel IP65 enclosure with non-glass display, enabling its direct application in the fields of biotechnology, food processing and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Optionally, an audit trail to FDA 21 CFR Part 11 may be specified.

In addition, the benefits of multi-voltage input, plus dual signal input and dual signal output make the 8285 equally applicable in the chemical industry, environmental engineering, water and wastewater treatment, and in power plants, as does the combination of conductivity and pH measurement, which may be handled at the same time by the same instrument.
