You can have your say on the latest HSE 'Control of Asbestos at Work' consultation document via an open seminar being organised by the BOHS (British Occupational Hygiene Society).

The consultation document for the Draft Control Asbestos at Work Regulations (and its associated Approved Code of Practice) to implement the requirements of the EC Directive 2003/18/EC has now been issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The BOHS has organised an open seminar, on Wednesday 11 January 2006, at the Society of Chemical Industry, London, to provide an opportunity for live debate prior to the closing date of 31 January 2006.

Many of the proposals are expected and not very contentious.

Without doubt, however, one that is provoking response from many quarters is the suggestion - not for the first time - to remove work on textured coatings from the scope of the licensing regime.

The HSE's studies have shown that the expected fibre concentrations are low and do not justify the need to maintain them under the tightest control.

Other parties do not agree with the HSE on this point.

Speakers include representatives from the HSE, HSL, consultancies and contractors.

The HSE will present the main proposals and the reasoning behind the proposed regulations and guidance, and this will be followed by an opportunity for others to present their positions and to explore alternative approaches.

There will be ample scope for discussion and to debate all the new proposals, and the HSE is welcoming the chance to hear the response of the occupational health and hygiene community.

The full programme, together with on-line booking, can be accessed via the event calendar on the BOHS website.

The cost, which includes lunch, refreshments and VAT, is £40 for BOHS members or £60 for non-members.
