Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 24, 2006

The British Occupational Hygiene Society is announcing the winners of the latest Ted King Award the David Hickish Award.

The British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) is delighted to announce that Judith Lamb, Health and Safety Manager at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), and Peter Baldwin, Senior Scientist at the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL), are the joint winners of the latest Ted King Award, and Ceiran Trow of Sypol is the winner of the latest David Hickish Award.

These recognise the best candidates in each year from those who have achieved the Society's Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene and its Diploma of Professional Competence in Occupational Hygiene, respectively.

Judith Lamb has worked within the fields of occupational hygiene and health and safety since 1991- in industry, in local government, in the Health Service and, prior to SEPA, with the Institute of Occupational Medicine.

She is currently responsible for developing and implementing SEPA's health, safety and occupational hygiene strategy for its scientific laboratory, field, boat, enforcement and support services staff across 22 sites in Scotland.

Judith is a Chartered Member of IOSH, as well as a Licentiate of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene of BOHS.

Peter Baldwin has been part of the occupational hygiene section of the HSL since 1999.

He has a background in physics, with practical experience in collection of samples of hazardous materials in workplaces and carrying out occupational hygiene surveys for HSL/HSE research projects or potential HSE enforcement action.

For eight years, Peter worked as an aerosol scientist in the exposure control section of HSL.

He, too, is a Licentiate of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene, as well as a Chartered Physicist and Chartered Scientist with the Institute of Physics.

Ceiran Trow is a Principal Occupational Hygiene Consultant and has worked for Sypol since February 1997, specialising in offshore and heavy industry.

Ceiran provided the foundation for Sypol's Scottish base through the development of offshore work, and is a Member of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene.

BOHS's Faculty of Occupational Hygiene awards qualifications in occupational hygiene and allied subjects through five levels of examination, of which these are the two highest.

The Certificate requires applicants to have had a minimum of three years' experience of comprehensive occupational hygiene practice, and is awarded to those who can demonstrate their knowledge of the broad principles of occupational hygiene, through both written and oral exams.

Holders of this Certificate are able to join the Faculty at Licentiate grade.

The Diploma is available to those who have had professional responsibility for all aspects of an occupational hygiene programme for at least five years, and is awarded to candidates who satisfy the examiners - again through written and oral exams - of their ability to make competent assessments of the probable extent of risk in various circumstances and to advise on suitable control procedures.

All candidates are usually science graduates and must hold the Certificate.

Holders of the Diploma can move up a grade within the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene, to Member.
