Hygiene journal records boost in prominence

The 2006 Journal Impact Factor for BOHS' research journal Annals of Occupational Hygiene showed an increase of 68% on the previous year, from 1.14 to 1.92.

BOHS' research journal Annals of Occupational Hygiene has recorded a big jump in its Journal Impact Factor (JIF), to a record level.

The 2006 JIF, published in June 2007 by Thomson Scientific, showed an increase of 68% on the previous year, from 1.14 to 1.92.

The previous highest for the journal was 1.58 some years ago.

The JIF is a measure of how often scientific publications world-wide refer to recent papers in the journal.

It is widely used by libraries and authors to judge the importance of research periodicals.

"Of course, we are very pleased about this excellent result", said Annals Editor Dr Trevor Ogden.

"We would not take too much notice of this on its own - I think that the JIF is overrated as a measure of journal quality, and can easily change by 25% from one year to the next just through chance variations.

However, the number of papers submitted to the journal, the number of institutions world-wide with access to the on-line edition, and the number of papers downloaded every month, have all been showing strong increases in recent years, and this record JIF level underlines these other indicators of success.

"But the real measure of success is whether we are helping to improve health at work long-term, and that, of course, is much harder to judge".

Dr Ogden and the other editors are planning to follow up this result by publishing a commentary exploring what lies behind this JIF increase, and the strengths and shortcomings of JIFs as a measure of journal quality.
