British Standards has just published a new edition of BS3790, a full revision of the standard used by the power transmission industry.
Complying with the Disability Discrimination Act
The deadline for complying with the Disability Discrimination Act is 1 October 2004, but BSI has plenty of publications and software tools that can ease the route to compliance.
Particularly it cross-references the new BS ISO1101 that takes into account of 20 years of geometrical product specification (GPS) development.
Using BS8888 encourages a common system, a common language and a common understanding.
It will help designers to order their output of design so that a product concept will be realised through the manufacturing process, no matter where located, in a way that avoids ambiguity or misunderstanding.
BS8888 will ensure that technical designers, specifiers and quality managers: have access to a single point of reference; use best practice techniques; speak the same language when specifying and graphically representing products; are precise in their application by leaving no room for misinterpretation; help the smooth transfer of design concept to manufacturing process; shorten product development time; and increase speed to market.
The use of BS8888 allows organisations to benefit from cost- and time-savings during and after the transfer of design concept to product realisation.
Some large buyers and users of technical product design, such as the MoD, have already stipulated the use of BS8888 as part of their requests for information (RFI) and requests for tenders (RFT).
BS8888:2004 Technical Product Specification (hard copy) is available for purchase from BSI Business Information at GBP 130 or GBP 65 for BSI Subscribing Members.
BS8888:2004 Technical Product Specification and all its 151 cross-referenced documents in PDF and hyperlinked from the BS8888 publication will be available on CD-ROM in December 2004.
The price will be GBP 900 plus VAT or GBP 450 plus VAT for BSI Subscribing Members.
BSI Business Information is also running a one-day event, delivered by industry experts, that will enable design engineers to effectively use geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing.
The session also looks at the new BS ISO1101 which now fully supports the requirements of geometrical product specifications.
