Standard specifies pipe thread design

A BSI British Standards product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 8, 2006

Pipe threads standard for where pressure tight joints are made on the threads, covering taper external threads and taper internal threads.

Required by building standards and codes, pipe threads must meet certain criteria to ensure safe and effective use.

Available from BSI Business Information is the BS EN 10226-2:2005 pipe threads standard for where pressure tight joints are made on the threads, covering taper external threads and taper internal threads.

Also covered are dimensions, tolerances and designation, and it outlines the common requirements for external pipe threads.

The standard specifies the requirements for thread form, dimensions, tolerances and designation for jointing pipe threads, sizes 1/16 to 6 inclusive, for joints made pressure-tight by the mating of the threads.

These taper internal threads are for use with pipes suitable for threading and for valves, fittings and other pipeline equipment connected by threaded joints.

Components with pipe threads produced to the dimensions and tolerances given in this standard can be assembled to give safe and effective pressure tight joints providing proper assembly techniques are used.

The techniques depend on a number of factors including the type of internal thread, the quality of the mating threads, the materials of the components being connected, the thread sealant and the assembly torque.

As there are different assembly techniques, it is recommended that the mixing of components is avoided with parallel internal threads and taper internal threads in the same piping system.

BS EN 10226-2:2005 covers: definitions; definitions gauging; designation; dimensions; symbols and explanations; and thread design (form and length).

BS EN 10226-2:2005 partially supersedes BS 21:1985.
