As a first stop for authoritative guidance on best practice guidelines, standards and supporting documentation which will ensure compliance to the Machinery Directive 98/37/EC, BSI has published a newly revised machinery safety standard.

BS EN60204-1:2006 "Safety of machinery - Electrical equipment of machines - General requirements" provides requirements and recommendations relating to: safety of people and property; consistency of control response ; and ease of maintenance.

The standard applies to electrical, electronic and programmable electronic equipment and systems which are not portable by hand while working, including a group of machines working together.

BS EN60204-1 is relevant to the electrical equipment or parts of the electrical equipment that operate with nominal supply voltages not exceeding 1000V for alternating current and not exceeding 1500V for direct current, and with nominal supply frequencies not exceeding 200Hz.
