The British Standards Institution (BSI) is about to publish PP 7722:2006 "Designing safe machinery: Guidance for higher education to the standards and regulations".

PP 7722:2006 includes a book and CD with material relevant for higher education engineering students on current standards, regulations, and guidance for producing a comprehensive risk assessment for a machine and has been structured to be delivered as a course.

If the course is delivered in its entirety, students will have a thorough understanding of all the hazards associated with machinery, and the principles of machinery risk assessment.

They will gain practical experience of designing machine guards, selecting interlocking devices, designing access steps and ladders and of producing the documentation necessary to comply with the EC Machinery Directive.

The CD contains over 360 PowerPoint slides, questions and answers, assignments and the texts of the 12 core European Standards.

The book is in 17 sections with notes for lecturers, activities and sample risk assessments.

The book introduces engineering students to the Safety of Machinery series of standards and regulations, and helps them to understand the hazards associated with designing and using machines.
