Technical product specification standard revised

A BSI British Standards product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 18, 2007

The British Standards Institution has published the third revision to BS8888:2006 "Technical product specification".

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has just published the third revision to BS8888:2006 "Technical product specification".

It now includes relevant standards published during 2005 and the first few months of 2006.

BS8888:2006 is an integrated engineering reference tool for product development and manufacturing technical specification documents.

It provides designers, engineers and quality managers with a roadmap for the preparation of all forms of technical product documentation.

The requirements set out in the new revision include some commentary and recommendations on technical matters considered helpful to users.

Developed in response to worldwide business and industry trends, its application can help in: outsourcing/subcontracting to reduce fixed cost overheads; global manufacturing resources, with attendant language implications; advanced manufacturing techniques increasingly dependent on digital data transfer; and sophisticated metrology, applied to verify workpiece functionality.

Using BS8888 encourages a common system, language and understanding in technical product specification.

It will help designers to order their output of design so that a product concept will be fully realised through the manufacturing process, it will ensure users: have access to one reference source with all information; speak the same language when specifying and graphically representing products; are precise in their application by leaving no room for misinterpretation; help the smooth transfer of design concept to manufacturing process; shorten product development time; increase speed to market; and save time and money.

This British Standard supersedes BS8888:2004, which has been withdrawn.

The price is GBP 148, or GBP 74 for BSI members.
