To help UK companies meet the requirements of the new regulations the British Standards Institution (BSI) has published a guide.

Anyone that manufactures, brands, imports, sells, stores, treats or dismantles electrical or electronic products within the European Union (EU) will be affected by the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive due to come into force on 1 January 2007 To help UK companies meet the requirements of the new regulations the British Standards Institution (BSI) has published a guide

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive - A survey of requirements and implementation is a comprehensive guide to the new legislation.

Early indications are that many companies mistakenly believe it is not applicable to them so may be unprepared for its implementation.

How will this BSI guide help me? It is a guide to the WEEE Directive.

Sets out the background to the WEEE Directive.

Explains the need for legislation.

Explains why the Directive came to fruition.

Covers the requirements and the implications for producers and retailers of EEE.

Detailed information for EU Member States.

Includes the Directive and Council Decisions.

Will help prepare you for the introduction of the Directive.

New information on countries' implementing measures will be added as it becomes available, including information on countries not included in this edition.

WEEE Directive requires an up-to-date BS EN 50419.

BS EN 50419:2006 Marking of electrical and electronic equipment in accordance with Article 11(2) of Directive 2002/96/EC (WEEE).

If you use BS EN 50419:2005 it is important that you know about the revised edition.

Following a review by the European Commission, some significant changes have been introduced which means BS EN 50419:2005 has been replaced by BS EN 50419:2006.

For full compliance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, it is important that you have the most up-to-date version.

The marking serves to clearly identify the producer of the equipment and that the equipment has been put on the market after 13 August 2005.

BS EN 50419:2006 replaces BS EN 50419:2005 which has been withdrawn.
