Cadtek has announced the UK availability of EMbassy/Works, the integrated wire harness design tool for SolidWorks users.

Cadtek has announced the UK availability of EMbassy/Works, the integrated wire harness design tool for SolidWorks users The new module - one of the first third-party applications to be optimised for the recently launched SolidWorks 2000 - was on show in the UK for the first time at Solid Modeling 2000

EMbassy/Works is written by Massachusetts based Linius Technologies and will be distributed in the UK by Cadtek.

EMbassy enables electromechanical assembly engineers to design and document wire harness and cable systems.

The stand alone version has been written to take advantage of the ubiquitous use of solid modeling software by allowing designers to constrain internal cabling in a digital environment, rather than force them to build physical models to determine appropriate cable lengths and paths.

The release of EMbassy/Works means that wire harness routing can new be accomplished by SolidWorks users without leaving the assembly modeling environment.

"This is the first single-window wire harnessing solution for SolidWorks," says Allan Behrens, Cadtek Vice Chairman.

"EMbassy/Works should enable us to build on the success we have been achieving with the stand alone product as it opens up a direct connection from mechanical to electrical design for users of the leading desktop solid modeling solution." EMbassy/Works integrates the main 3D elements of EMbassy, EM~Librarian and EM~Designer, within the SolidWorks environment.

EM~Librarian allows for the inclusion of wiring-specific intelligence within SolidWorks part models.

Specifically, parts can have 'pins' attached to them to enable them to be intelligently linked to other parts via wire or cable connections.

A library of standard connectors modeled in SolidWorks will be shipped with EMbassy/Works.

EM~Designer bridges the gap between logical electrical connectivity and 3D assembly modeling.

Users can import wire connections from a from/to list or add connections individually.

These intelligent connections are then routed through channels and harnesses which are in turn constrained by any existing physical geometry.

Both manual and automatic routing are supported.

Manufacturing requirements are handled by two further EMbassy modules: EM~Report, a configurable report generator, and EM~Naiboard, which generates the annotated diagrams necessary for harness production.

EMbassy/Works will bring all of this existing EMbassy functionality inside the native SolidWorks design environment.

All commands will be accessed by new Windows-standard toolbars and dialogue boxes.

"The fact that solid modeling has evolved from being niche and high end to being mainstream enough for its own show is encouraging," says Allan.

"But to derive true benefits from the technology you need to look beyond modeling itself.

EMbassy/Works is a classic example of two different design disciplines being made to work in tandem to deliver a true business advantage.

It fits perfectly into Cadtek's ongoing electrical CAD strategy." Cadtek has also recently announced the UK launch of E3.Series, a new family of electrical and electronic design tools which sets new standards for price/performance in electronic design automation (EDA).
