Success for capacitive sensors in Canada
The performance of the Tripleshield sensor has secured several large orders from the Canadian plastics industry and Carlo Gavazzi is now its largest supplier of capacitive sensors
South-western Ontario is the centre of the plastics industry in Canada, with many major companies manufacturing moulded products in the area As a result, there is a proliferation of suppliers to these companies, providing components such as vacuum delivery systems that feed raw plastic into the hoppers of the moulding machines

One company was having some problems with the capacitive sensors that were controlling the level of the delivery system.
The motors in the carrier arm and its switching devices were causing electromagnetic interference and voltage spikes that were damaging the function of the capacitive sensors.
A local representative of Carlo Gavazzi approached the company to demonstrate Carlo's Tripleshield sensors.
The product was found to offer much better protection against the electrostatic discharge and line transients that were upsetting the delivery system than the ACI sensors they were previously using.
Carlo's Tripleshield construction isolates the sensors from environmental disturbances while extending the sensing range to better than 25mm.
Tripleshield sensors are immune to electrostatic discharges of more than 17kV, compared to the maximum of 8kV set down in the IEC 801.2, grade 3 standard.
Tripleshield is also unaffected by nuisance switching caused by GSM telephones and walkie-talkies as well as large transients from motors, contractors and solenoid coils switching off.
In fact, the sensors will withstand transient bursts in excess of 4.4kV which is more than twice the level of immunity demanded by the EC directive on electromagnetic compatibility.
The range consists of a wide variety of sensors to suit a broad range of applications.
The sensing range can be adjusted from 2 to 25mm and cylindrical or compact flatpack housings can be provided for convenience of mounting.
Both AC and DC models are available with programmable outputs and a clearly visible ring LED is provided for easy installation and diagnostics when the sensor is in operation.
Polyurethane cable is provided as standard although a plug version is available as an option.
Temperature operating range is between -30C and +80C.
The performance of the Tripleshield sensor secured several large orders from these companies and Carlo Gavazzi is now the largest supplier of capacitive sensors to the whole of the Canadian plastics industry.
