Swindon Pressings is using lockout bags made by Castell Iso-Lok to ensure safety while maintenance is carried out on overhead cranes.

The lockout bag is a simple device, originally designed for enclosing electrical plugs to prevent accidental reconnection.

The company uses them to enclose crane pendants as a secondary safety measure, ensuring staff are aware that the cranes are offline.

Swindon Pressings, a wholly owned subsidiary of BMW Group, manufactures automotive body panels for BMW, MG Rover, Land Rover and Nissan.

Overhead cranes are used to move the tooling in the press shops, which can weigh up to 40t.

While maintenance is carried out the power to the crane track is isolated using locking off equipment supplied by Castell Iso-Lok.

For added safety, lockout bags are drawn shut over the crane pendants, clamped and locked with a padlock, or multi-clasp and several padlocks.

Highly visible, they make it obvious that the cranes are out of use, and can only be removed once the maintenance work has been completed and all the padlocks have been removed.

The lockout bags measure 10 x 19in and, although designed for electrical plugs, fit most crane pendants.

Some of the pendants at Swindon Pressings were too big to fit, but Castell Iso-Lok is able to provide larger bags on request.
