Maintenance workers at Nestle's Chilled Desserts plant in Staverton, Wiltshire, are using lockout bags made by Castell Iso-Lok to ensure safety while maintenance is carried out on the wet mixing operation Nestle is committed to employee safety and has worked closely with Castell Iso-Lok to develop a safe system of working for all employees and Castell Iso-Lok lock-off equipment is used throughout the plant

The lockout bag is a simple device, originally designed for enclosing electrical plugs to prevent accidental reconnection.

It can be drawn shut and locked with a padlock, or a Castell Iso-Lok clasp and multiple padlocks.

The technicians use them to cover air operated butterfly valves once the air hoses have been disconnected, closing the valve.

Maintenance can then be carried out safely, as the air can only be reconnected and the valve re-opened once the lockout bag has been removed.

The wet mixing operation primarily makes chocolate mousse, and the ingredients are mixed via computer control.

Maintenance is sometimes necessary on the piping if there is a leak, and occasionally on the valves.

If not locked off properly there are theoretical dangers to technicians from hot water sterilisation at temperatures of 127C, or from clean-in-place chemicals such as caustic soda and acid.
