Copper Development Association is calling for entries to this year's 'Copper in Architecture Awards 9'.

This design-led competition includes awards for the architectural use of copper on recently completed projects, here or abroad, by UK based architects.

A second award will be made for unbuilt projects - of particular interest to architectural students.

As in previous competitions, both categories of awards will be selected from drawings and photographs assessed by architectural judges from a panel of practising architects at the forefront of British design.

The panel includes last year's judges: Graeme Sutherland of the Bartlett School of Architecture, Laurence Bain of Michael Wilford and Partners, Trevor Clapp of Foundation Architecture Ltd., and Peter Clegg of Fielden Clegg Bradley.

A further, discretionary innovation award recognises the particularly effective use of copper in specific areas of relevance today, such as sustainable building, economical construction, prefabrication, conservation or new uses of the material.

Finally, the established 'John Smith Award for Craftsmanship' will continue to be judged by specialists in metal roofing and cladding.

The annual competition continues to grow in popularity with a 50% increase in entries last year when the architectural design winner was Ian Ritchie Architects' Jubilee Line Extension Vent Shafts building in East London.

This also won the Architectural Innovation Award for its radical use of copper.

Alsop and Stormer Architects' well-known Peckham Library received the Highly Commended award while the new Visitors' Reception Centre for HM Prison Edinburgh by Gareth Hoskins Architects received a Commendation, as did Terry Farrell and Partners' landmark International Centre for Life building in Newcastle.

The Awards Presentation will be held in London on 16 October, an event now recognised as bringing together architectural judges, winners and other entrants with the specialist contractors and craftsmen responsible for realising architects' visions in copper.

The closing date for entries in all categories is 31 May and entry forms can be obtained from CDA.
