Motor Challenge is best industrial practice

A Copper Development Association product story

Most environmental schemes cost money, but here's one that improves environmental performance and saves money in the process.

Most environmental schemes cost money, but here's one that improves environmental performance and saves money in the process.

Hence, it is no surprise that since its launch on 18th February, a wide range of partners have signed up for the European Commission's Motor Challenge Programme (MCP).

The motivation for signing up to MCP is as diverse as its partners.

Benefits include energy and cost saving and improved environmental performance.

Some partners appreciate the image value of MCP, while others are in it for the technical support provided through the programme's endorsers and national contact points.

Some partners come from heavy industry and see MCP as an opportunity to reduce cost and at the same time improve environmental performance.

Other partners manufacture highly value-added products.

Energy is a very small part of their production cost.

They see MCP as a means to reduce their environmental impact as part of their social responsibility.

One particular world-class manufacturing operation simply considers MCP as best practice, and so its participation was a natural decision.

This company has a management policy to buy only the most efficient products on the market and: buys only Eff1 motors; replaces variable speed motors with a motor plus inverter drive; and does not rewind small motors.

Manufacturing in an environmentally conscious country such as Denmark has its own challenges.

High energy and environmental taxes make it hard to compete.

Here, MCP provides a double dividend, as not only does it reduce energy and costs, but it also provides a more favourable environmental taxation regime.

Finally, partners operating in Europe's most competitive manufacturing economy find that MCP participation allows them to improve their competitive position, by reducing the cost of doing business.

As diverse as they may be, all are good reasons to participate in this voluntary programme, which fits in the overall European Climate Change Programme, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and help Europe realise its Kyoto targets.

The Motor Challenge has the potential to contribute savings of 30Mt of CO2 emissions - equivalent to over 10% of the EU's Kyoto targets.
