"The brasses - properties and applications" is the title of the updated and revised issue of Copper Development Association's publication known in the industry for many years as "The big yellow book", nicknamed by many "The Brass Bible".

The generic term "brass" covers a wide range of copper-zinc alloys with differing combinations of properties, including excellent machinability and conductivity, good corrosion resistance and 100% recyclability.

There are over 60 EN compositions for brass with copper contents ranging from 58 to 95%.

Apart from the major alloying element, zinc, small additions (less than 5%) of other alloying elements are made to modify the properties so that the resulting material is fit for a given purpose.

This book presents an overview of the properties of these brasses, with details of the major manufacturing processes and product forms available, to help specifiers to select the most appropriate alloy for their application.

Revised by CDA metallurgist, Peter Webster, the text draws on the experience of a number of acknowledged experts in the industry who have made contributions on the latest applications and practices in manufacture.

In spite of the extent and wealth of technical data presented, "The brasses - properties and applications" remains a very readable book for anyone interested in learning surprising facts about these copper-based alloys, one example being their beneficial property of restricting the growth of micro-organisms such as MRSA, E coli and Listeria monocytogenes.

This new 64 page A4 book is now available from CDA for GBP 10, but the first 50 people to respond to this article will receive a copy free of charge.
