Japanese users of the Altair-Li system exchanged ideas during a recent meeting in Yokohama.

Cedip Infrared Systems recently held a meeting with Japanese users of its Altair-Li system in Yokohama (Japan).

Altair-Li is a system widely used to measure stress analysis by thermoelasticity.

This inaugural meeting was organised to provide a forum to enable cross-fertilisation of ideas, to discuss new developments and to allow users to pose technical questions relating to stress measurement.

Among the 40 people present were representatives from companies including Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Yamaha, Daihatsu, Suzuki, Mazda, Yorozu, NTN, NSK, Kobe Steel, JFE Steel, Nipponese Steel, Kanemitsu, Osaka University, Technical Institute of Tokyo, Nipponese University and the Japanese National Aerospace Laboratory.

A popular seminar was given by Dr Yasui of Toyota who presented an illustrated application talk describing endurance measurement by thermography on the design of an aluminium engine block.

The method of dissipated energy measurement presented was developed in conjunction with Cedip Infrared Systems.

Toyota has been a user of various generation Altair Li systems for more than 13 years.

Dr Sagami of Osaka University presented another well received talk on the principles and applications of lock-in thermography.

This seminar pointed out the growing interest and advantages in using dissipated energy measurement by lock-in thermography (D-mode) to gain a better understanding of fatigue phenomena as well as enabling better determination of endurance limit with determined number of cycles.

Overall the meeting generated a considerable amount of enthusiastic discussion.

Other seminars covered a range of topics including: principles of fatigue, stress analysis and energy; stress and energy measurement; development of IR-FEM software; and principles of thermography and stress measurement.
