Latest version of computational fluid dynamic package brings solver technology without compromising the software's advanced modelling and complex physics capabilities.

CD Adapco has released the latest version of its flagship computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package, Star-CD.

Version four brings solver technology to the Star-CD community, without compromising the software's advanced modelling and complex physics capabilities.

By using the latest polyhedron-based finite volume technology, Star-CD v4 delivers benefits in speed, robustness and usability.

These include polyhedral cells: Star-CD v4 is fully polyhedra-enabled.

Polyhedral meshes are as easy to build as those of tetrahedra however, compared with tetrahedral meshes, polyhedral meshes are more accurate, use less memory, converge faster and require fewer cells to obtain the same level of accuracy.

Version four introduces free surface modelling, an improvement on the technology previously used throughout the marine industry in Comet.

The software's transient capabilities have been improved with the addition of an algorithm and high-order discretisation scheme.

A liquid film model reinforces Star-CD's spray modelling.

Version four is fully 64bit compatible and includes improved dynamic memory handling, further easing the solution of very large calculations.

The firm's Steve MacDonald said this release represented a payoff for CD Adapco's decision to invest heavily in solver technology.

"While other CFD vendors are content to simply build upon their existing aging software architectures, with Star-CCM+ and now Star-CD v4, we have achieved our aim of basing all our products on the most advanced solver technology available", he said.
