When Wichita Clutch needed a diaphragm for a new brake actuator to withstand increased temperatures of up to 200degC, they turned to sealing specialists Ceetak
With two decades of experience in thermal imaging the Argus3 is the latest generation camera, setting new standards of performance, durability and ergonomic design.
In close co-operation with e2v's engineering project team, Ceetak Application Engineering Manager Peter Bell looked carefully at the precise criteria required.
"We needed to design three gaskets to seal the main body, battery hatch and LCD screen.
The gaskets had to protect the system against water immersion, temperature stress and impact resistance.
In addition, the seals had to be precision moulded to guarantee a secure fit and uniform compression across each sealing area".
It was decided that a silicone material would offer both the temperature stability and environmental resistance required.
The material also offered low compression set characteristics, with the sectional shape of the seals being optimised for uniform compression and cost effective yet complex mould tooling was created.
Manufacturing assembly conditions were also a consideration and pips were moulded into the gaskets to retain them in place during the assembly process.
The new Argus units underwent a rigorous and extensive test programme.
e2v's Project Manager, Bhavesh Mistry explains that: "In the fire fighting market it is essential products resist large amounts of water, heat and humidity, so only high performance components will do.
Ceetak seals were chosen for this product due to the company's expertise in this area".
