The University of Durham is currently accepting registrations for a week-long short industrial course on "New product introduction: design for competitiveness".

This course is designed to give an overview of the design process from market investigation to visualisation.

It is aimed at managers, middle managers and designers seeking the opportunity to take a step back and see the process as an integrated whole and to enable them to take back to their company a knowledge of good contemporary practice.

Different prominent companies will act as host and offer the opportunity to see and compare their own particular approach to design.

The course covers a number of established and emerging design support techniques.

A strong emphasis is placed on teamwork based methods and the importance of a systematic and analytical approach.

Days on industrial premises include shop floor or design office visits and a structured discussion with host company management on aspects of technology and systems, people and culture, business and environment at the design-manufacture interface.

For delegates whose work schedules do not enable a full week's attendance, there will be limited opportunities for the days to be taken separately.

Details of the course, which will run from 18th to 22nd October 2004, are available from the CIAM website.

The cost for each course is GBP 1200 (VAT exempt).

SMEs should be eligible for funding, typically 50% of cost, from local funding support organisations.

The content of each day is "free standing" and can be taken on its own at a charge of GBP 250.

CIAM courses can also be combined into a certificate/diploma or masters degree for anyone seeking a personal development plan in design, manufacturing and management.
