Couplings tolerate radial misalignment

A Centa Transmissions product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jul 2, 2008

Centaflex-KE couplings combine steel bushes with pressed on rubber bushes made of temperature-resistant elastomer.

Centa's Centaflex-KE couplings suit diesel-driven construction machinery with nonstandard engine flywheels.

Diesel-driven hydrostatic machines with flange-mounted pumps have traditionally been connected with torsionally stiff couplings, shifting dangerous resonances to speed ranges above the operational speed.

Unfortunately this technique results in relatively high reaction forces if there is any radial misalignment.

These forces may damage the coupling as well as connected shafts and bearings.

These drives are flange-mounted in order to reduce possible misalignment, but radial misalignment of up to 0.5mm can still occur due to tolerances in machining, flexing of the crankshaft or wear of the crankshaft bearing.

The Centaflex-KE coupling solves this problem with a coupling disc that consists of high-quality glass-fibre reinforced plastic with cylindrical chambers on the outer diameter.

These chambers combine steel bushes with pressed on rubber bushes made of temperature-resistant elastomer.

The play between rubber bush and coupling disc, together with the elasticity of the rubber bush, results in the necessary radial elasticity.

The compound injected hub consists of CentaDUR plastic, which is free from abrasive glass fibres, has metal-like strength and very good sliding qualities and produces no fretting corrosion at the splined pumpshafts.

The couplings are pre-assembled as a unit and bolted to the flywheel.

The splined pumpshaft is simply plugged into the profile of the hub.

Sizes 85 and 89 have the same flywheel connection dimensions as the flywheels of various small Diesel engines.

Flywheel connection dimensions have been adopted to sizes 8, 16 and 25 of traditional Centaflex couplings series A and H.

Sizes 93 to 98 correspond to SAE sizes 6 1/2 to 11 1/2.
