Flexible coupling saves more space on the waves

A Centa Transmissions product story

Innovative space-saving capability has been achieved through reducing the outer diameter of the coupling without compromising drive performance.

New from Centa Transmissions, the Centaflex-M-127 is a compact flexible coupling that offers even greater space-saving properties for marine drives in motor boats, yachts and other small vessels.

The innovative space-saving capability has been achieved through reducing the outer diameter of the coupling without compromising drive performance.

Specifically developed for use in motor boat and yacht applications where space is at a premium, the CF-M-127 is a major step forward in meeting the growing demand for compact drive train components.

Vibration and noise caused by the misalignment of the gearbox and propeller shaft is a significant problem in vessels of all types and the use of a flexible coupling eliminates these problems commonly found in rigid transmissions.

Although the elastic mounting of the engine goes some way to reducing vibration transmission into the vessels hull, only with a suitably specified flexible coupling can it be significantly reduced.

However, the space available for replacing a rigid coupling with a flexible connection is often very limited, but the new Centaflex CF-M-127 now makes installation in tight spaces far simpler as the outer diameter is reduced by approximately 15%.

Also, the CF-M-127 eliminates the need for additional components such as spacers, which in turn frees up valuable space behind the gearbox.

This highly efficient, torsionally flexible, zero backlash coupling ensures a smooth and quiet-running transmission and as the CF-M-127 compensates for all types of misalignment, particularly angular, it also reduces wear to the shaft bearing and gear box.

Consequently, this significantly reduces maintenance requirements and costs.

As is the case in all Centaflex M series marine couplings, the CF-M-127 is fastened to the propeller shaft by means of a secure clamping hub, which means that no time-consuming machining of the shaft is needed.

It is also very easy to adapt shaft length as the propeller shaft diameter is not impaired by either bore or a keyway.

These couplings are readily available in two sizes: the CF-M-127 for use on engines of up to 40hp and the CF-M-160 for engines up to 80hp, this being subject to propeller shaft speed.
