Light curtains protect in hazardous areas
Cedes offers two monitoring systems which are amongst the smallest in their class in the world.
Compact safety light curtains ensure inconspicuous safety coverage of hazard areas.
This gives the designer the freedom he needs to combine safety and good design under the one umbrella.
Particularly in the case of smaller machinery items safety regulations can painfully restrict freedom of design due to spatial constraints.
Essential safety components must not hinder of operation or spoil the aesthetic look of the machine.
Compact safety components afford the designer the freedom of scope he needs to be able to comply with statutory regulations.
With its Safe200 and Safe400 safety light curtains Swiss optosensor manufacturer Cedes offers two monitoring systems which - with a profile cross-section of 15 x 20mm - are amongst the smallest in their class in the world (EN 954-1 Category 2 and 4 finger protection).
Both systems are now available with a protection zone height of 50mm upwards.
"With this degree of compactness the designer is afforded the freedom necessary for both new installations and updates", states Beda Broder, Head of the Safety and Automation business sector.
With paper cutting machined the feed area near the knife must be safeguarded.
In the process manual feeding of paper stacks must not be hindered by safety components getting in the way.
German paper cutting machine manufacturer Wohlenberg safeguards this area contactlessly using two slim nose-shaped projections above the front table.
Integral to these noses are the Safe400 light curtain receptor and transmitter bars.
As the regulation demands that the zone directly in front of the knife at least must be protected by a light beam, Wohlenberg uses the Safe400 in cascades.
Two segments of differing length, connected by a connector cable, are installed in the "nose" at different positions.
o realise this double level of safeguard only one controller is needed.
Optimum safeguarding for a low installation cost is guaranteed.
Megamat, a vertical storage manufacturer, uses the advantages of compact light curtain systems in its storage systems.
For safety protection of the to-bin and from-bin transfer zone the Safe200 light curtain is used.
So that loaded product carriers can be allocated to a height-optimised storage location the Object 100 position measurement light curtain is used.
Its high acquisition speed makes shorter to-bin transfer times possible.
Both light curtain systems have the identical slim cross-section (15 x 20mm).
In that way they can be fitted behind the to-bin and from-bin transfer opening.
This total integration detracts neither from operation nor the aesthetic look of the unit.
Teca-Print Iberica is the Spanish branch of tampon press machine manufacturer Teca-Print based in Thayingen in Switzerland" For a customer printing small plastic components the assembly area on a rotary indexing table must be safeguarded.
After printing components are removed from the holder by a mechanical device.
The operator can manually correct automatic extraction malfunctions.
He has access to the extractor through a relatively narrow opening in the separator wall between indexing and extraction zones.
So that the operator is not endangered by the rotating indexing table Teca-Print uses a 100mm module length Safe400.
If the light curtain is broken by a finger or by the operator's hand indexing table movement is immediately stopped.
Due to the compactness of the Safe400 no mechanical modifications were necessary for installation of the transmitter and receptor bars.
The unit was ready for operation again in a short time.
The safety curtain's combined safety monitoring plus the emergency off switch is provided by the SafeC1S3 safety controller.
At only 22.5mm wide it can easily be accommodated where space in the system is at a premium.
Compact light curtain systems help the designer to implement his ideas without having to enter into compromises.
They afford the designer the option of new avenues in relation to design and operation, even in the case of plant updates.
