"Special" washers are a particular area of expertise for Challenge Industrial Fastenings Generally covered by the groupings of terminal washers, cup washers and nylon washers, this really refers to custom items that are punched, pressed or moulded to an application specific requirement

This includes use on electrical, furniture, automotive and electronic assemblies.

They are available in a variety of materials including Brass, Copper, Steel and of course moulded Nylon.

Moulded nylon washers are used as insulators, spacers and locators where their non-corroding non-conductive properties are needed and the ability to create a custom "fit" is important e.g as a stand-off support or to locate two separated components.

Generic metal types include tab washers made in a variety of shapes with external notches and/or tabs either single or multiple.

The purpose of the tab is to locate the washer, or other parts, and/or for the tab to be bent against another component - usually a nut, to prevent movement.

Grip, claw or terminal washers are designed to grip or to hold terminals or wire in place on threaded screws or bolts.

Their action can be deduced from the shape, and the applications are almost entirely in the electrical and electronic industries.

They are often used in pairs to contain the electric wire within the terminal connection.

Countersunk or cup washers are designed in a number of shapes: countersunk screw head - usually referred to as the "C" type; alternatively, they can be raised - the "R" type - so that countersunk screws can be used in fixing to a flat surface.

Often, cup washers are used merely to improve and to enhance the finish of a visible fixing.

Normal applications are usually for use with wood, and the washer prevents the head of a wood screw embedding itself into the wood surface, at the same time covering any ragged edge left by the drilling or countersinking operation.

Spiked washers are also normally used for applications involving wood, where the raised spike will penetrate the soft wood surface, leaving the flat face of the washer to provide a tough bearing surface.
