Toothed and serrated lock washers are available from Challenge Industrial Fastenings in Spring Steel, Stainless Steel and Phosphor Bronze Their standard series are to British European, American and major manufacturer standards

The basic principle of these washers is to use the spring reaction of their hardened teeth to bite into both the work piece and the nut/bolt head so effectively ensuring the tightening torque is maintained even under vibration conditions.

Additional features include improved electrical contact (e.g earthing terminals), sealing, spanning of large clearance holes and as a stress limiter when tightening components.

Both tapered tooth and rectangular tooth varieties are possible and the range includes inner and outer serrations.

The internal type is generally used under small headed screws while the heavy internal types are used with large bolts and nuts on heavy machinery and equipment.

Where engagement of all the teeth can be assured with the contacting fastener, the external type can be used.

For oversize holes or where a large bearing surface is required, the combined external-internal type washer is recommended.

It is also employed as an insert between members which require adjustment before tightening.

Additional types include countersunk, dome and dished (to distribute load) as well as pyramidal (for high torque) and versions with a sealing capacity.
